CHAPTER THIRTEEN

LUCY EDWARDS

I opened my eyes and turned to see the doctor checking my vitals.

He smiled, “Oh, you are awake?”

I nodded and tried to sit up, but he touched my shoulder and kept me in the same position. “No, don’t stress yourself any further you still need a little more rest.”

“I just want to sit. My whole back aches.”

“It’s normal, don’t worry. It will subside soon.” He said smiling, “Come on, give me your hand.”

I raised it, and he took it, took a closer look, and stared at me. “How much sleep have you been having the past few days?”

I scratched my forehead. “Some.”

“Not nearly enough, it would seem. Do you have any idea why you are feeling so horribly?” He asked, then placed my hand back down, turned toward the door, pushed it closed, and turned to me again. He sat down on the edge of my bed and took my hand again. “Ok, Lucy, let me ask you this. Did you know that you are pregnant?”

“What?”

He nodded and looked at my stomach, “You are pregnant. Your bloodwork has come back with a positive pregnancy test. We can confirm with an ultrasound to be certain. This explains why you have been feeling so awful. Morning sickness can be a common occurrence during pregnancy. I have handled similar cases before and know their signs. I suspect your body is reacting to your lack of rest and not taking good care of yourself and the baby.”

I chuckled and turned away from him, praying this was a bad nightmare I would wake up from. “This must be a joke, doc. Please tell me you aren’t serious.”

The doctor frowned and shook his head. “No Lucy, this is not a joke. We will get that ultrasound booked right away so we can confirm your pregnancy, and check to make sure everything is okay with the baby. Is there someone I can call to be here with you?”

“Is there someone you can call?” I looked at him, in disbelief and shock, “Oh God, I am so screwed.” I cried as I covered my face with the pillow.

“What’s the problem?” the doctor asked, genuinely worried.

“What’s the problem? What’s not a problem with this whole situation. The baby’s father…my parents,” I cried and continued, “My life, Oh God, no.”

“I think we should start first with getting you feeling better, and then you can decide what you want to do from there. The rest can wait a little bit. We can start you on an anti-nausea medication first, to see if that helps you feel at least a little better. Also, we need to get some fluids into you, as you are very dehydrated. As well as some food in your belly. I would suggest we start slowly with soup. How does that sound?” the doctor asked.

I quickly removed the pillow from my face and looked at the doctor. “That sounds good, I guess. Please don’t tell anyone, please I am begging you. Not until I know what I am going to do.
